WHAT ARE PINHOLES?

Pinhole cameras are the oldest and most rudimentary kind of camera. They traditionally have no lens or shutter, only a pin-sized hole in a thin piece of metal with which to let in light. Because the aperture is so small long exposure times are required. This make capturing moving objects difficult, making them blur or disappear. Exposure times can be estimated and calculated fairly accurately, but pinholes archaic nature makes them difficult to gauge, which can create unexpected results. Embracing these oddities is part of the essence of enjoying pinhole photography.

Pinhole cameras can be made out of any hollow opaque object. Most often they are made from cardboard boxes. For the images I have here I made my cameras from cylindrical boxes with the film curved 180 degrees along the inside of the box. This accounts for the 'fish-eye' distortion and panorama view.
